Bryana Joy's "Ocean-A-Day" Exhibit
Ocean-A-Day: A 31 Day Painting Challenge
Artist Statement: The 31 paintings in this collection were all completed in
January 2023 as part of a daily painting challenge. For inspiration and
technical guidance, I used only reference photos I’d taken myself over the
past two years at Sandy Hook, Asbury Park, and Ocean Grove in New
Jersey, and at Muscongus Bay and Biddeford Beach in Maine. I had a lot of
fun experimenting with brushwork, and the imperative to complete a full
piece every single day forced me to paint and problem-solve more quickly
than I’m accustomed to as a fiddly and particular artist. It is my hope that
these pieces will find new homes where they can go on representing the
power, color, and spontaneity of our oceans that are simultaneously so
vulnerable and so in need of our care.
